Dear Macabee Parents and Campers,
We had such a great time with the campers this past week. After Macabee was voted “Mitzvah Makers of the Week” last week, we knew that our third week at camp could only get better, and we were right. Even though the weather was, once again, blistering hot, we found ways to stay cool and just have fun. For example, our group found that sometimes we just need to kick off our shoes and relax- literally. We thought up an amusing new game to play, where one person must hide everyone’s shoes, and then the other campers have to go looking for their own pair of shoes. It really is the little things that make the day even more fun.
A very important holiday that we talked about in theme time this week was Passover. Our amazing unit head, Val, told us about the holiday and how the Jews liberated from Egypt after over 300 years of slavery. This holiday is marked by giving back to one’s community and being charitable. Therefore, we, as a unit, cleaned up around the Jewish Community Center. The kids had a fun time doing it, and were excited to see who could pick up the most litter. However, our group did not stop there. We continued our efforts to keep the camp clean by picking up the area around the pool after all of our swim times.
Tuesday was “Rock Star Day,” and we were able to see all the creative costumes that campers and counselors wore, including, The Wiggles and The Spice Girls. We even had a surprise visit from JUSTIN BIEBER! Justin Bieber was kind enough to come down during our lunch time to say hello to the campers. Some of us even got his autograph! Later that day, during Shir (ending song), we were delighted to see a live performance of “The Spice Girls”! Unfortunately, the rain hindered us from seeing the entire show. However, it was fun never-the-less.
On Thursday we had the Tzofim Overnight, which we’re sure everyone was excited for. The campers immediately started in with the fun by playing games, like Capture the Flag; cooking; and doing Arts & Crafts. We also were able to participate in camp games, and watch a couple of counselor competitions. Not only that, but we were given a second free swim, where the kids played with the counselors in the water, and enjoyed games like “colors.” After, there was a bonfire, where the campers and counselors made wish sticks. Let’s hope our wishes come true! We hope the kids had a lot of fun at the overnight, and made even more friends in the process.
Next week’s theme is Israel Holidays! Another important holiday that we will be talking about is Tisha B’Av, which commemorates the destruction of the first and second temple in Jerusalem. On Wednesday, there will be another Tzofim field trip and we know that this one will be even better than the last! Thursday, there will be a Food Festival, and then on Friday there will be a carnival run by the C.I.Ts. We know that our C.I.T’s are working very hard on this festival, and we can’t wait until they join us as Counselor Assistants for the rest of the summer!
Sincerely,
Devon, Kirsten, and Rebekah
